Work in Canada

LMIA for Employers

Hire foreign workers when Canadians are not available.

Overview

A Labour Market Impact Assessment is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that lets an employer hire a foreign worker. The employer has to show it tried to recruit Canadians and permanent residents first, offers the prevailing wage, and meets the conditions of the high-wage or low-wage stream. A positive LMIA lets the worker apply for a work permit.

Who it's for

  • Canadian businesses facing genuine labour shortages
  • Employers hiring skilled specialists from abroad
  • Employers supporting a current worker's permanent residence application

How we help

  • We plan and document the advertising campaign so it meets ESDC requirements from day one.
  • We prepare the application, the transition plan where needed, and responses to officer questions.
  • We explain compliance obligations so your business stays in good standing after the worker arrives.

Program rules, fees and processing times are set by the Government of Canada and change often. Check the official IRCC information page, or ask us for advice on your situation.
